Samsung Plans 2-nm Mobile Chip Production by 2025
Published: 6.26.2023
Samsung Electronics plans to start mass production of 2-nanometer (nm) mobile chips in 2025. The company said that the new chips will offer a 12% imporvement in performance, a 25% increase in power efficiency, and a 5% decrease in area compared to its current 3nm chips.
Samsung's 2nm chips will be manufactured using the company's new gate-all-around (GAA) transistor technology. GAA transistors are a new type of transistor that offer a number of advantages over traditional finFET transistors, including smaller size, faster switching speeds, and lower power consumption.
Samsung's 2nm chips will be the first commercial chips to use GAA technology. The company's main rival, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), is also developing GAA technology, but it is not expected to start mass production of 2nm chips until 2026.
Samsung's announcement is a significant development in the global semiconductor industry. The company is the world's second-largest chipmaker by revenue, and its plans to produce 2nm chips could help it to catch up to TSMC, which is the world's largest chipmaker.
The production of 2nm chips will require a significant investment in new manufacturing facilities. Samsung has said that it will invest $17 billion in its semiconductor business in 2023, and it is expected to invest billions more in the coming years.
The production of 2nm chips is also a major technological challenge. The smaller the transistors, the more difficult it is to manufacture them without defects. Samsung has said that it has overcome some of the challenges associated with GAA technology, but it is still too early to say whether the company will be able to produce 2nm chips at a scale without significant problems.
Despite the challenges, Samsung's plans to produce 2nm chips are a sign of the company's commitment to the semiconductor industry. The company is investing heavily in new technology and manufacturing capabilities, and it is betting that its 2nm chips will give it a competitive edge in the years to come.
In addition to mobile chips, Samsung also plans to use its 2nm process to manufacture chips for high-performance computing (HPC) and automotive applications. The company said that it will start mass production of 2nm HPC chips in 2026 and 2nm automotive chips in 2027.
The production of 2nm chips is a major milestone in the semiconductor industry. The chips offer significant performance and power efficiency improvements over previous generations, and they are expected to be used in a wide range of applications. Samsung's plans to produce 2nm chips are a sign of the company's commitment to the semiconductor industry, and they could help it to maintain its competitiveness in the years to come.
