Sharp and Xiaomi reach wireless communication technology patent cross-licensing agreement

Recently, Sharp’s official website released news that the company signed a wireless communication technology patent cross-licensing agreement with Beijing Xiaomi Mobile Software Co., Ltd., ending a lawsuit filed by Sharp in China in September 2022.
According to the agreement, Sharp and Xiaomi will mutually license the use of their respective patents in the field of wireless communication technology. Regarding the specific content of more cross-licensing agreements, Sharp said it was unable to disclose them due to the signing of a confidentiality agreement.
It is reported that Sharp has been committed to developing core technologies for mobile communication systems including 3G, 4G and 5G for more than 20 years. Through active patent application work, it now has more than 6,000 patents related to W-CDMA, LTE, LTE-Advanced and Important patents related to 5G.
These standard essential patents (SEPs) are not only widely used around the world, but also bring significant economic value to Sharp. Sharp has currently licensed standard essential patents for wireless communication technology to a number of leading companies in the telecommunications equipment and automotive industries in Japan, the United States, Europe, China and South Korea. In addition, Sharp is also committed to combining wireless communication technology with other cutting-edge technologies, such as 8K, AIoT, etc., to achieve a wider range of application scenarios.
After years of technology accumulation, Xiaomi also has certain technical patent capabilities. Among them, in terms of standard patents, the number of 5G standard patent applications is 7,000+, wireless standard technology is 2,000+, multimedia technology is 80+, and other standard formulations are 140+.
Therefore, this agreement will promote cooperation between the two parties in technological innovation and market expansion, and help enhance Sharp's market position in the field of wireless communication technology. In addition to Xiaomi, Sharp has also signed similar cross-license agreements with OPPO, vivo, Huawei and other companies.
